Italy first love. This could be the recurring theme in the numerous chapters on the personal and artistic partnership of the most famous twosome in the fashion universe. Summing up the story of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in a few lines is no easy task. Their surnames have become a well-known trademark all over the world, easily recognizable due to its glamour and incredible versatility. A world made up of traditions, transgressions, culture and Mediterranean character. After their debut in 1985 with the Real Women collection – consisting of only a few items and non-professional models -, in 1986 Sicilian Domenico Dolce and Milanese Stefano Gabbana created the second ladieswear collection, then added a store and a knitwear line. In 1989 they designed a beachwear line and opened their first store in Japan which was followed by their first menswear collection. Their tribute to the Mediterranean woman is D&G’s signature, inspired by a strong, cosmopolitan and extremely sexy woman in guêpière or men’s pinstripes, complete with white shirt and tie. A woman who wears a cloth cap and uses a rosary for a necklace, flaunting her femininity with all its contradictions.
